For Animal Rescue of Carroll, 712 Women on a Mission’s recent $3,800 donation came at an ideal time.

At its shelter in east Carroll, ARC is seeing an influx of dogs and cats and also is nearing finish of a building addition called a catio — cat patio — that will enhance cats’ care.

Members of 712 Women on a Mission commit to pledge $100 four times a year for the organization to a local charity. Members meet each quarter and select a charity to receive the funds.

Previous to Animal Rescue of Carroll, recipients this year have been Carroll School Foundation for the Carroll Kindness program in the first quarter and Carroll County Conservation Foundation for a playground next to the new east shelter at Swan Lake State Park in the second quarter.

In 2021, 712 Women on a Mission donated a total of $20,500, with recipients including New Hope Foundation, Carroll Summer Fun Camp, NAMI-Carroll (National Alliance on Mental Illness) and Boy Scout Troop 105. The $20,100 raised in 2020 went to the Family Resource Center Day Hab kitchen project, Community of Concern food pantry, Carroll Area Child Care Center for shade structure for playground, and St. Anthony Regional Hospital Behavioral Unit.

712 Women on a Mission welcomes members from the Carroll area and beyond. The “712” in the name indicates the large western Iowa area-code territory.

712 Women on a Mission members said they chose Animal Rescue of Carroll because of the catio project and the shelter’s need for supplies to care for pets.

Animal Rescue of Carroll is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 2006. ARC shelters lost, unwanted or homeless dogs and cats, with a focus on adoption, education, cruelty prevention, spay and neuter programs, and reuniting lost dogs and cats with their owners.

Animal Rescue Shelter Director Sammi Elliott said the donation will be used for veterinary care, food and other expenses.

Elliott said pet adoptions have slowed most likely because of the economy.

“Some dogs have been here since January or February. We have more longer-stay dogs,” she said. “People are reluctant to adopt because they don’t know for sure what next week is going to be like because of the economy.”

The 10-by-30-foot catio under construction on the southeast side of the shelter at 1721 E. 10th St. probably will be completed in about a month, said Mike Davis, president of Animal Rescue’s board of directors. Davis, who’s retired after a longtime veterinary practice in Carroll, said the catio will be divided into three sections with capacity of about 12 cats per section. The catio will be equipped wit0h climbing towers, cat toys, plus litter boxes and food and water.

“We believe the catio will provide our cats with fresh air to enhance their health and mental state,” Davis said.

The catio will probably be used about nine months a year but the screening will be covered in the winter, he said.

Privacy fencing will prevent dogs outside for exercise from getting close to the catio.

Morton Building, which built the current wood-frame and steel shelter in 2016, also is contractor for the catio. Davis said Morton Building is “one of the best in the business as far as steel-siding construction.”

The catio’s charcoal and white colors match the rest of the shelter and Morton Building gives a 40-year guarantee against paint fading.

Other contractors are Daniel Construction of Lake City, which did all the cement in the original building plus the parking lot; Mike Janning Flooring, epoxy on the floor; and Jorge Ceballos Home Improvement of Carroll.

“Jorge came to Carroll about 10 years ago from Cuba. He’s skilled in construction and has his own business, doing small projects for homeowners, and we were able to get him for this project,” Davis said. “I can’t say enough about him. He’s fun to work with. He’s done the inside work.”

The catio sections are divided with PVC or FRP wall board, which can be easily washed, Davis said.

Cost of the construction is about $30,000, and private individuals have contributed $8,000. Davis said Animal Rescue has generated nearly $30,000 the last couple of years receiving redeemable cans and bottles in a collection bin just north of the facility.

“Over the last two years we’ve raised enough money to pay for the project,” Davis said. “(The redemption) has been an excellent fundraiser for us, and we’re glad the people of Carroll support that. Thank you for bringing your cans and bottles out to us.”

Shelter Director Elliott said Animal Rescue also needs volunteers to help with care of pets, even if it’s just an hour occasionally.

Help is needed with cleaning kennels, feeding and providing fresh water, and exercising pets.
