BEIJING (AP) — China imposed visa bans and other sanctions Tuesday on Taiwanese political figures as it raises pressure on the self-governing island and the U.S. in response to successive congressional visits.

The sanctions come a day after China set more military exercises in the seas and skies surrounding Taiwan in response to what it called “collusion and provocation between the U.S. and Taiwan.” There's been no word on the timing and scale of the Chinese exercises.

Estonia is removing a Soviet monument in a border town in Estonia’s Russian-speaking part with the Baltic country’s prime minister saying it represents a risk for public order. Prime Minister Kaja Kallas says that “no one wants to see our militant and hostile neighbor foment tensions in our home" and the government won't allow Russia "to use the past to disturb the peace in Estonia.” The dismantling of a replica of a Soviet tank atop a monument commemorating the Soviet soldiers who died freeing Estonia from Germany during World War II was underway Tuesday. The relocation of another Soviet war memorial, from a city park led to days of rioting in 2007.

Pakistani officials say that gunmen riding on motorcycles opened fire on police escorting a team of polio workers in the country's northwestern Pakistan, killing two policemen. A local police official says none of the polio workers were harmed in the attack on Tuesday in the town of Gomal, in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, along the border with Afghanistan. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, which came on the second day of Pakistan’s latest anti-polio campaign in the province. All 14 new polio cases in Pakistan since April have been from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province.

A bus carrying paramilitary soldiers in Indian-controlled Kashmir has skidded off a mountainous road and rolled down into a river, killing at least six and injuring dozens of others. Police say those injured in the accident are being flown to a military hospital in the region’s main city of Srinagar. Officials say the bus was carrying at least 39 soldiers and two police officials who were among thousands of government forces who had been deployed to protect a Hindu pilgrimage to a Himalayan cave. The pilgrimage ended last week. The paramilitary Indo Tibetan Border Police says the apparent cause of the accident was brake failure.

One of the most important features of the Inflation Reduction Act — which makes massive investments in renewable energy to curb climate change, drives down prescription drug costs and more — is what it is not: an irresponsible spending spree pushing up the federal deficit.

India’s top court is expected to take up a government plea to settle issues that led to the national soccer federation’s suspension by FIFA and the possible loss of its hosting rights for the Under-17 Women’s World Cup in October. FIFA's decision to suspended the All India Football Federation follows the Supreme Court of India's appointment of a three-member Committee of Administrators to manage the affairs of the soccer federation and to conduct elections under a new constitution by the end of August. A top government law officer has urged the court to take up the matter urgently.

ADIYAMAN, Turkey (AP) — Stargazers gathered to watch the Perseid meteor shower among ancient statues atop Mount Nemrut in southeastern Turkey.

West Virginia's health agency has bought 16 vans to provide free COVID-19 testing and vaccines at school and community events. The state Department of Health and Human Resources says a grant from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention paid for the vans. Some of the vans have already been deployed to health departments. Others will be delivered in the coming months. The DHHR says schools that are interested in having a van come to an event should contact their local health department. The department also is offering to send free rapid COVID-19 test kits to interested schools and provide them with air purifiers and sanitizing supplies.

Bill Gates has called for South Korea to further step up in international efforts to prevent infectious diseases like COVID-19 as he stressed the need for the world to be better prepared for the next pandemic. Gates was speaking to South Korea's National Assembly on Tuesday. He noted South Korea’s strength in public health and vaccine manufacturing and praised the country’s help toward getting COVID-19 vaccines to lower-income nations. Gates later met leaders of the SK business group to discuss further cooperation on health projects. SK Bioscience produces COVID-19 vaccines and has received funds from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to develop nasal sprays to help prevent coronavirus infections.

Kenya is calm a day after the declaration of Deputy President William Ruto as the winner of the narrow presidential election over longtime opposition figure Raila Odinga. The vote has been closely watched in the East African country that has been crucial to regional stability. There were protests by Odinga supporters in some cities Monday night after chaos around the declaration as a majority of electoral commissioners alleged the process was “opaque.” Those commissioners were appointed by President Uhuru Kenyatta last year. They gave no details about their sudden objection after an election widely seen as the most transparent ever Kenya. The country was calm on Tuesday.

China is imposing visa bans and other sanctions on Taiwanese political figures as it raises pressure on the island and the U.S. in response to successive congressional visits. The Communist Party office that announced the sanctions says they're designed to punish diehard supporters of Taiwan independence. The measures apply to Taiwan’s de facto ambassador to the U.S. and others, but it's unclear whether they will have any impact. China considers self-governed Taiwan to be its territory. It held military exercises recently that including firing missiles over the island. It announced more drills Monday without further details. The U.S. says China was seeking to erode the status quo with its provocative response to recent congressional visits to the island.

Local officials say a fire at an ammunition storage site on Crimea left two people injured. It comes a week after a series of explosion at an air base on the peninsula annexed from Ukraine by Russia. Russian media reported that the blaze and a series of explosions rattled the village of Mayskoye in the Dzhankoi district of Crimea early Tuesday. The Russian Defense Ministry said a fire erupted at a “site for temporary storage of ammunition of one of the military units.” Ukrainian authorities haven’t yet commented on the incident.

A group of German air force fighter jets neared Singapore on Tuesday, closing in on their final destination in a marathon bid to fly them some 13,700 miles from their home base to Southeast Asia in just 24 hours. The exercise comes at a time of heightened tensions between China and the U.S. and its allies over Taiwan, and demonstrates the ability for a European nation to move air power quickly to the region. German Defense Minister Christine Lambrecht told reporters that despite the war in Ukraine being a priority at the moment, the Eurofighter mission underscores that Asia has not been forgotten.

The Associated Press preseason college football poll comes with the promise of an exciting season for teams that make the Top 25. AP College Football Writer Ralph Russo suggests a healthy dose of caution, unless you root for Alabama. Last season was especially volatile in the Top 25: 14 teams that started the season ranked finishing outside the rankings. The average for the previous decade was 9.5 teams falling out of the poll. Russo says the top-ranked Crimson Tide is the closest thing to a sure bet in college football.
