Syracuse, N.Y. — The collapse of part of a building Tuesday has caused two neighboring homes to be boarded up and streets closed on Syracuse’s North Side.

Around 10:35 a.m., first responders received reports of a wall collapsing inside 413 Pond St., according to Onondaga County 911 center dispatches.

Construction was going on inside the building when the wall collapsed, according to a witness.

The visible damage was concentrated between 413 and 409 Pond Street.

The risk of the building collapsing led city officials to cut power and water to 413 Pond St. and two neighboring homes.

The buildings at 407 and 409 Pond Street were boarded up. Barricades have been set up to block off Pond Street from Park to Steuben streets.

Syracuse code enforcement director Jake Dishaw said that the building will have to be demolished. They are expecting it to be taken down within the next few days if it does not collapse on its own.

Dishaw said he was unaware if the building had outstanding code violations.

The building that’s partially collapsed is owned Patridai Invest NY LLC, according to county records. Codes enforcement officials said the LLC’s manager is currently in Belgium, but a local manager has been on scene with officials.

All residents in the building and in the nearby homes have been evacuated.

The collapsed wall is leaning against the exterior wall of 409 pond street, Dishaw said. They will have to assess the possible damage to the home after the neighboring building is stabilized or demolished.

The American Red Cross workers are on scene assisting people displaced by the emergency.

Firefighters told bystanders that no one was injured when the wall collapsed.

Zizzie Atkins, a resident of 409 Pond Street, said fire officials would not allow her to grab blood pressure medication from inside her home before it was boarded up. A deputy chief on scene would not comment on the matter.

The Red Cross will be placing the displaced residents in a hotel until they can return to their homes, Dishaw said. A total of 5 people were displaced, fire officials said in a news release.

Portions of Park Street and Pond Street could be closed for several days, Dishaw said. The intersection will reopen when the area is safe, he said.
