PICKARD Hardware was nominated for two awards - it was also in the running for SME of the Year - and took the Exporter of the Year title.

The Keighley-based business was founded in 1982 and marks its 40th anniversary this year.

Its founder, John Pickard, passed away in April.

Managing director Dale Spencer has since taken over, and described the awards evening as “emotional”.

“We really wanted to win for John, and we’re absolutely overwhelmed,” he said on the night.

“When we were nominated it was all nice and good for the business, but when John passed away, we really wanted to win for his family and his memory.

“I’d really like to thank John for the work he has done, and to show appreciation - it’s what he deserved.

“We employ locally, and we have a good relationship with manufacturers across Bradford and Ilkley.”

The two other nominees were AM-Clad and Applelec.

AM-Clad provides antimicrobial and hygienic PVC wall cladding products, which provide infection control for hygienic environments across all sectors.

The business is based off Great Horton Road, and its UK-made antimicrobial wall cladding ranges kill bacteria and prevent the spread of germs or contaminants in medical facilities, laboratories, kitchens, manufacturing plants, nurseries, schools and offices.

During the pandemic, AM-Clad landed a contract to supply hygienic cladding to the emergency Nightingale Hospital in London, supplying it with 1,155 sheets of PVC hygienic wall cladding.

Speaking at the time, director Andy Smith said: “In the biggest week for the NHS since its creation, we are proud to play our part.

“We have been busier than ever in terms of supporting the NHS as so many temporary buildings are needing hygienic cladding.”

Applelec is a trade supplier of bespoke sign, display and LED lighting products, including LED light panels.

The company was founded over 20 years ago, and is based at Wharfedale Business Park, off Tong Street.

It describes itself as a “trailblazer in British manufacturing” due to its in-house operations.
